It’s my little spring ritual. Along with unpacking the summer clothes, switching out the quilts for cotton coverlets, and planting some pretty in the yard, I read the book Maryjane’s Outpost. maybe I should say consume instead of read, because it really gets in my spirit and brings me back to life. Every year it helps me shake off the winter indoor greys and officially open the windows to sun, fresh air, and maybe an adventure or two.
From foraging for food to dropping everything to go camping in a vintage trailer, Maryjane inspires all the best wild behaviors. There’s a certain feeling I get when I crack open this cover; a confidence, an independence, a delicious savoring of every breeze.
Outdoors is a state of mind. My favorite state of mind, actually. It’s pushing your limits of comfort (dealing with heat, rain, bugs)…pushing your limits of physical capability (hike a bit further, the view is just around the bend!). Maybe it’s confronting old fears (anyone have a tubing-with-dad story?)…or new dependancies (cell phones and fast food come to mind).
Maybe there’s more growing around here than just the daffodils, eh?
But all that serious stuff aside, the outdoors is fun! Your own personal playground! Tree climbing, flower planting, hiking, paddling- you can never be bored outside!
We’ve needed this all winter; a nourishing nature-stew of sun, leaves, wind, creeks, mud, and sea salt. And spring is finally here! So it’s time to shake things up a bit! Turn a bit wild! So go grab this book and see what it draws out of you…and then come back and tell me your adventure stories!
